Completed in 1890, the Palace was built according to a daring design of space and form, based on the bold and innovative use of traditional building techniques, making the materials and constructive systems work to the limits of their potential.
For most of its existence, Güell Palace has been subject to the demands of intensive cultural and educational use, but despite this the building reached its first century with flying colours. This has been achieved thanks to the extraordinary quality of the materials used and, above all, their rational distribution following a no less extraordinary design.
For twenty-five years, Barcelona Provincial Council undertook various global maintenance and specific restoration works up to 2002, the year of the 150th anniversary of Gaudí’s birth. Following the celebrations, a new process of restoration began, involving a thorough study of the materials, elements and constructive systems, and the installations, to guarantee the conservation and condition of the building, and the adaptation of all the parameters of mobility, safety, efficiency and comfort required of public use buildings today.
